I'm celebrating with my amazing besties who have been with me through life's ups and downs. Birthdays hold so much emotion for me because, as an exjw, I never had the chance to celebrate a single birthday as a child. It was a painful experience, one that deeply impacted my self-esteem and sense of worth.
Let me take a moment to explain why not being allowed to celebrate birthdays is so detrimental to a child's self-esteem. When you're denied the opportunity to have a special day dedicated to celebrating your existence, it sends a powerful message that you are not valued or worthy of being recognised. It's like a part of your identity is being erased, and it can leave lasting scars.
Birthdays are more than just cake and presents; they represent a time when we can feel seen, loved, and appreciated for who we are. They are an occasion to gather with loved ones, reflect on our growth, and embrace the joy of being alive. For children, birthdays are especially important as they shape their sense of self-worth and help them develop a positive self-image.
Not being allowed to have a birthday celebration can create a sense of isolation and make a child feel like an outsider, detached from the experiences of their peers. It can lead to feelings of inadequacy, as if they are somehow less deserving of love and attention. This can have long-lasting effects on their self-esteem and overall mental well-being.
Today, as I blow out the candles on my cake, I want to send a message of solidarity to all those who have experienced the pain of not being allowed to celebrate their birthdays. We are worthy of love, recognition, and celebration. Our existence matters, and our special day should be honoured.
Let's continue to support and uplift each other, reminding ourselves and others that everyone deserves to feel cherished and celebrated, not just on their birthday, but every day.
